DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Jersey City Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DuraFlex chimney caps across Jersey City, with typical installed pricing running $285 to $640 depending on flue diameter, chase height, and whether we’re matching an existing cap or upgrading to a spark-arrestor model. Most installations are completed in a single visit once we confirm the flue dimensions and cap style on site. The way most homeowners discover the part has failed is simple: they notice water staining on the ceiling near the chimney, or they spot rust flakes on the roof after a storm, or a bird gets into the house and the camera later shows the cap’s mesh is torn clean through.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex caps are built to pair with their stainless steel liner systems, which means the cap bases are sized to the liner’s inside diameter, not the chimney’s outside dimensions. The most common sizes we install in Jersey City are 6-inch and 8-inch round for furnace and boiler liners, and we also see 5.5-inch on some older retrofit jobs. Here’s the compatibility gotcha that catches people: a DuraFlex cap ordered for a 6-inch liner will not seat properly on a 6-inch rigid pipe from another brand, because the slip-fit tolerances differ by a few millimeters. If you have the original cap, the model stamp is usually on the underside of the base ring. If you don’t, we measure the liner opening on site before quoting anything, and we photograph that measurement so you can see exactly what we’re matching.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for DuraFlex specifically: we recommend OEM caps when the liner is under warranty, because some warranty language gets picky about third-party parts. For liners that are well past warranty, a quality aftermarket cap with the same diameter and a stainless mesh makes sense and typically saves $40 to $80. Either way, we write the part number and brand on the estimate before work starts.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
  • Rust staining on the cap body or base ring. DuraFlex caps are stainless, but the hardware and rivets are often a lower grade. Once the rivets start rusting, water gets under the cap edge and works into the chase.
  • Torn or sagging spark-arrestor mesh. Squirrels and raccoons chew through thin mesh in one season. We’ve pulled nests out of liners in Jersey City where the mesh was gone and the interior was packed with twigs and fur.
  • Water stains on the ceiling or walls near the chimney. A cap that’s shifted or lost its seal lets rain run down the outside of the liner and into the chase. This is usually what prompts the call.
  • Debris inside the firebox or at the base of the liner. If you’re finding bits of mortar, rust flakes, or bird nesting material, the cap is no longer doing its job.
  • Visible gap between the cap and the liner. High winds off the Hudson can shift an undersized or poorly fitted cap. We’ve seen gaps of a quarter inch or more that let in driven rain during nor’easters.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Jersey City, expect to pay $285 to $420 for a standard 6-inch or 8-inch stainless cap installed on an accessible chimney, and $420 to $640 for larger diameters, taller chases, or jobs where the top of the chimney requires ladder staging or roof access work. The price we write for you includes the cap itself, the replacement hardware, removal and disposal of the old cap, a watertight re-seal, and a photo of the completed installation. Before any number goes on paper, we run a camera down the flue to confirm the liner condition, because a new cap on a failing liner is money wasted. That inspection is part of every Level Two visit and has been since 2009, when we made camera-scan documentation the default on every chimney we touched. Corrine Halstead is the one who set that standard here, and she still reviews the footage with you before a single number is quoted. The camera doesn’t negotiate. Neither does creosote.

DIY or Call Us?

If your chimney is on a single-story roof and you can safely reach it with an extension ladder, you can check the cap for visible damage from below without any tools, and that’s worth doing once a year. What we would not recommend is climbing onto a Jersey City roof with a drill and a tube of sealant if you don’t do it regularly. The failure mode we see from DIY cap work is an improper seal at the base, which lets water run straight down the liner and into the house, and that repair costs more than the cap ever did. Roof work near the Hudson gets wind gusts that will take a cap right out of your hands. If the cap is on a chase over a second-story roofline or the roof pitch is steep, call a trained professional. We’re at (862) 272-3868, and we’ll give you a written price before anything is climbed, drilled, or sealed.
