Clear the area around the fireplace, move furniture and rugs back about six feet, and don't start a fire for at least 24 hours before we arrive. Cold ash is easier and safer to work with. If you have pets, keep them in another room while we're moving equipment through the house. The tech will lay drop cloths and run a HEPA vacuum to keep soot contained. On the roof side, make sure gates are unlocked if access is fenced.

Usually yes. The sweep happens from the top down in most cases, which means we need safe ladder or roof access. Some flues can be swept from the firebox with a rotary system, but the camera inspection is far more useful from the top looking down. If roof access is limited, like in tight downtown blocks near the Jersey City waterfront, we'll still find a way. No, not if it's done right. We lay drop cloths around the hearth, seal the firebox opening with plastic when needed, and run a HEPA-filtered vacuum during and after the sweep. We wouldn't. A chimney is a fire and carbon monoxide pathway running through the center of your house. A sweep who shows up without insurance and knocks a tile loose or misses a crack in the liner is a liability you didn't plan for. The state of New Jersey requires chimney service businesses to carry a Home Improvement Contractor license, and you should ask to see it. If someone is working for cash and won't show proof of insurance, that's a complete answer in itself.

The gold standard is the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) certification, which covers fire codes, clearances, and inspection standards including NFPA 211's three levels.
