Famco Flue Liner Replacement Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Flue Liner Replacement: The Jersey City Owner’s Guide

A Famco flue liner replacement in Jersey City typically costs between $1,850 and $3,400 installed, depending on the liner diameter, flue height, and whether your existing crown needs work at the same time. We stock Famco-compatible stainless steel liners on our trucks and can usually complete the swap in a single visit. Most homeowners find out their Famco liner has failed during a chimney inspection for something else: a water stain on the ceiling near the flue, a furnace that keeps tripping its rollout switch, or flakes of metal showing up in the firebox.

Here’s the short version: if your Famco liner is cracked, separated at a seam, or rusted through, it’s not venting anymore. It’s leaking flue gas into the chase or the masonry. And in a Jersey City rowhouse where the flue runs through the middle of the house, that’s a problem you don’t want to sit on through one more heating season.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco has manufactured flue liners and venting components for decades, and over that time the product line has split into a few distinct families. The liners we replace most often in Jersey City are the flexible 316L stainless steel liners Famco produced through the 1990s and early 2000s, along with their rigid connector pipe sections. If you have a Famco liner installed before roughly 2005, the identification plate is usually riveted to the liner cap or stamped into the first section of rigid pipe at the appliance connection.

The first compatibility gotcha: Famco’s early flex liners used a lighter-gauge wall than what the current code expects for wood-burning applications, which matters when a Jersey City homeowner has switched from oil to gas and assumes the old liner still passes. It often doesn’t. The second gotcha: Famco’s connector collars were proprietary to certain diameters. If your liner measures 5.5 inches, it’s a Famco 6-inch nominal liner, but a modern 6-inch connector will not always seat without an adapter. We keep those adapters in the truck.

On OEM versus aftermarket: for a Famco liner, we generally install current-production 316L or 316Ti stainless liner that matches the Famco diameter, either from Famco’s current line or from DuraFlex, HeatShield, or Gelco, depending on what the application calls for. A Famco liner is not a collector’s item. What matters is the alloy, the wall gauge, and whether it’s listed for the appliance class you’re venting. We’ll write the exact part number and manufacturer on your quote before any work starts.

Signs Your Famco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Famco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing
  • Rust flakes or metallic debris in the cleanout or firebox. This is the liner wall delaminating from the inside. Stainless fails from the flue-gas side first, and by the time you see flakes at the bottom, the wall has thinned enough that replacement is the answer, not patching.
  • Water staining on walls or ceilings adjacent to the chimney chase. A liner seam that has separated lets condensation escape into the chase, and that water follows the framing. In Jersey City’s older frame rowhouses, this shows up fast.
  • A furnace or boiler that trips its rollout switch or shuts down intermittently. A perforated liner drafts poorly, and modern gas appliances are unforgiving. The appliance doesn’t know the liner failed. It just knows the draft is wrong.
  • Flue gas odor in the house, especially on humid days. A small hole in a liner under negative pressure may not spill gas into the living space when everything is firing normally, but when the wind shifts or the house goes negative, it will.
  • A camera inspection shows seam separation, pinholes, or a tear. This is the definitive diagnosis. Most Famco liner failures we see in Jersey City are seam failures, not rust-through. The flex corrugations fatigue over 20 to 30 years of heating cycles, and the seam gives way.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

The installed cost for a Famco flue liner replacement in Jersey City runs $1,850 to $3,400 in nearly all cases. The low end covers a straight, shorter flue, typically a gas furnace or water heater vent under 25 feet, where the old liner pulls out cleanly and the crown is intact. The high end covers taller rowhouse flues, liners over 35 feet, crane or lift access, a crown repair, or a case where the old liner has to be cut out in sections because it’s wedged against masonry.

Every quote we write includes the liner, the connector kit, the cap or termination, labor, and the cleanup. You get a written price before we start, a written scope that names the exact liner brand and diameter, and a written warranty on the work. Clause 1 of the Haven Standard requires it: written price, written scope, written warranty, before anyone touches the ladder. You also walk away with a photo record of the install, including the new liner in place inside the flue. Clause 4 of the Haven Standard has required that photo record on every job since 2009.

You can do the diagnosis yourself: check the cleanout for debris, look for water staining, and note any furnace shutdowns. You can also pull the cap and peer down the flue with a flashlight, though you’ll see only the top two feet at best. What you shouldn’t do is pull and reinstall a flue liner on a Jersey City roof without fall protection, a second person, and a way to move a 30-foot section of stainless flex without kinking it. A kinked liner is scrap. A dropped liner is a roof repair and a liner replacement.

There’s also the drafting math. A liner that’s the wrong diameter for the appliance will either condense and rot early or draft so hard it pulls the pilot out. If you have a flue-gas analyzer and a manometer, this is a weekend project. If you don’t, call us at (862) 272-3868. We’ll camera-scan the existing liner, show you the footage, and write the quote on the spot. The camera doesn’t negotiate. Neither does creosote.
